To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and, by a sleep to say we end
Devoutly to be wish’d.
To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub.

Sleep is sacred. A necessary respite from the churn. But sleep is fickle. It exists just inches out of grasp and taunts your tired eyes. Rest does not come. It almost never does.

Perhaps tonight will be different.

Up All Night is a GM-less, one-on-one storytelling game about bargaining with your brain for one night’s rest.

Praise for Up All Night

I read @nonagondice's game "Up All Night" last night, ironically while I was laying in bed struggling to sleep. And tweeps, this game is brilliant, deeply beautiful, and profound. Even simply reading it felt like a breath of fresh air to my soul.

This is a really beautiful game.

I played as the Mind and I had no trouble roleplaying it, because I have endured way too many nights of self-battering like this before. Whatever my Person had to say, I could come up with something mean in response to that, but my Person remained calm and reasonable.

I said, "I don't mean to work against you. But what you tell yourself is way too different from what you actually think, feel or believe in." My Person said, "Maybe I was trying too hard to lift you up, but I guess it'd better if I just let you talk and listen."

I suddenly got a bit teary-eyed and said, "Yeah, it'd be."

And our character slowly drifted into sleep like that.

I also wrote a little bit more about my thoughts with this game in my native language. -> My (very short) blog post

This is a really nice game. Thank you for making this.

Hi rawnm94,

Thank you so, so much for playing the game and sharing your thoughts. I read the blog post too, and I was in tears by the end of it. I can't begin to express how much your words mean to me. I'll revisit them for a long, long time. Thank you again. <3
